Acceleration

Acceleration

Acceleration is a way to accommodate the high abilities and individual needs of gifted students in grades 3 - 12.  It enables students to progress through the curriculum at a more rapid rate than is normally planned.  In Glen Rock, an identified student may accelerate to the next grade for one or more subjects.  Occasionally, full acceleration (grade skipping) is recommended.  Students have the opportunity to accelerate through November 1 of the school year.

Grades 3-4
Identified students may be accelerated to a higher grade for language arts or mathematics.

Grade 5
A student who participates in subject acceleration will have the opportunity to continue with acceleration to the Middle School as a fifth grade student.  Students in the language arts component accelerate to the sixth grade for language arts and social studies because these two curricular areas are part of the sixth grade block.  Fifth grade students who accelerate for mathematics may also accelerate for science if they had at least a B average in fourth grade science.

Students who are enrolled in the fifth grade and accelerate to the Middle School must arrive at the Middle School by 7:45 a.m.  At the conclusion of their Middle School classes, these students are transported by bus to their respective elementary schools.

Grades 6-12
Students may continue acceleration throughout the Middle School and High School.  In addition, the High School offers a wide variety of Honors and Advanced Placement courses.  Students do not have to participate in acceleration to be eligible for these courses.  All students may apply.  Additional information may be obtained from the Guidance Department.
